ItwasnotuntilthepublicationofFarfromtheMaddingCrowd,Hardy'sfourthnovel,thatHardywonwidespreadpopularityasawriter,andhewasabletogiveuparchitecture.Thebookwaspublishedseriallyin1874,inCornHillMagazine,ajournaleditedbyLeslieStephens,thefatherofVirginiaWoolf.Thenovelwaspublishedinshortsections,andasyoureadit,youcanseethattheyintentionallyleavethereaderinsuspense;thiswasadevicetomotivatereaderstobuythenextissueofthemagazine.EarlyreviewerscomparedHardy'swritingtothatofGeorgeEliotandrecognizedhimasanimportantnewvoiceinEnglishfiction.
Hardywentontowritenovelsatanextraordinaryrateformorethan20years,writingoneeveryoneortwoyears.HismostfamousnovelswrittenduringtheseyearsincludeTheReturnoftheNative,TessoftheD'Urbervilles,andTheMayorofCasterbridge.AfterthepublicationofJudetheObscurecausedamajorscandalin1895,Hardystoppedwritingnovelsanddevotedtherestofhislife(morethan30years)topoetry.Hislastgreatprojectwasanepicpoemtitled"TheDynasts,"aversedchronicleoftheNapoleonicWars.AftersometimeinLondonhebuilthimselfahouseinhisnativeDorsetshireandlivedtherefortherestofhislife.Hewaswidowedin1912andmarriedFlorenceDugdalein1914.
Hardywasadevotedreaderofphilosophy,scientifictexts,theBible,andGreekliterature,andheincorporatedmuchofhisknowledgeintohisownworks.OneofthemostprofoundinfluencesonhisthinkingwasCharlesDarwin,particularlyDarwin'semphasisonchanceandluckinevolution.ThoughbroughtuptobelieveinGod,Hardystruggledwithalossoffaithsufferedbymanyofhiscontemporaries;heincreasinglyturnedtoscienceforanswersaboutman'splaceintheuniverse.
